It's been pouring buckets in the city for weeks. West is out of the
question. Still snowing in the mountains. So, east it is for a dry,
half way warm and sunny ghost town photo shoot and respite from
Puddle Town.

Kent is an unincorporated community in Sherman County, Oregon, United States.
Although it is unincorporated, Kent has a post office with a ZIP code of 97033.
Kent lies at the intersection of U.S. Route 97 and Dobie Point Road, between
Grass Valley to the north and Shaniko to the south.

Kent was the site of a railway station, originally called Guthrie, on the
Columbia Southern Railway. The name of the community stemmed either from
a drawing from a group of names submitted by local residents or was chosen
directly by Kent's first postmaster, according to differing accounts of the
matter. Milton H. Bennett was that postmaster, who ran the post office
beginning in about 1887".

This shed housed the gas powered electric generator that powered the
gas station in it's early years.

The abandoned cafe/gas station in Kent was closed many years ago.
The Environmental Protection Agency informed the owners that they had to
start carrying one million dollars liability insurance and build a concrete
retaining wall in case of leaks from the underground gas tanks. Faced with
already slim profits, the owners decided to close their business. Behind
the café lies an empty house and the remains of the old school built in
1937. The school was closed in 1980 and destroyed by a fire a few years
later. Kent's children have been bused to Grass Valley since the closure.

66 cents for a gallon of regular. Those were the days....
