Dog Mountain Trail report.
More information about Dog Mountain is
HERE and
HERE.
The "express" route (most difficult) is 3.01 miles to the summit
The easiest is the Augspurger route to the West. 4.17 miles from trailhead to summit.
These are easy, mostly well signed trails so getting lost (except in deep snow) is
unlikely.
After the hike, we had a yummy lunch at the Gorge Panda. Then a short drive
to a scenic vista for this view of Mount Hood.
Pretty good, clear view of Mount St Helens from the Dog Mountain summit.
We knew it would be wall-to-wall Obama Lovers up here so we hit the trailhead early
(07:15). There were already a half dozen cars in the parking lot. Most of the
people we saw this early were serious hikers. But by the time we headed down, the
dipso goonie birds were already on the way up. By 11:00 or so, it was pretty much all
idiots on the trail headed up.
Dog is one of our least favorite hikes, owing mostly to it's popularity with the
Multnomah County Jagoff population. Still, it's a good cardio workout on the way up.
You never know what the weather is going to do so we figured this may be the last
chance to see colorful weeds up here this year. Turned out, the color is still a
week or two from peak.
The view of Mount Hood (left) and Mount Defiance (right) as seen from the Dog
Mountain summit.
