Cornucopia is a ghost town of the gold mining boom of the 1880s in Eastern
Oregon, United States. The name of the town was chosen since it meant "Horn
of Plenty". Gold was discovered in Cornucopia in 1884. The town was platted
in 1886. It is located east of Baker City high in the mountains of Pine
Valley almost due north of Halfway, Oregon, on Oregon Route 86.
It is said its gold ore was so rich nuggets would literally fall out the
rock. Cornucopia has a meaning denoting wealth and plenty and the town was
given its name by early miners who came from Cornucopia, Nevada. By contrast
to other mining towns of the 80s and 90s, Cornucopia was somewhat orderly
as it had few shootings and killings during its brief history. Many of its
original buildings still stand despite the severe winters.
